The posting of you tube videos and flickr badges to blogs: the process

The Video we made in class was to be uploaded on to You tube and then posted on our blogs. But.... the video our group made had a few of the students faces one it( quite visible)and one of the girls didn't want to be on you Tube. She had heard of someones bad experience with you tube so we didn't upload our video on to You tube. We downloaded the video off the DVD and then posted it on our blog.

To upload videos on to You tube you need to be a member. So all that is required of you apply to you tube.

The Flickr Badge was a little more challenging as I taught myself as I went along. I had already applied for a flickr account so all I had to do was up load some of my favorite photos on to my flickr account. Now finding the make a flicker badge was another story... it took me forever to find it. It was not very obvious way down at the bottom of the page. But once I found it, it wasn't so bad. I then dragged and dropped my photos on to the badge template and then saved it. I then logged on to my blog and clicked on the customize button and then clicked on a gadget button and searched under popular items found the one the allows you to upload your badge and clicked upload. And voila!!! there it was, I don't know if its right but its there!

I enjoyed creating a blog but I think blogging deserve a better topic than discussing course content!

Online communities

Online communities are social networks that allow people to post information, which crosses geographical and political boundaries so discuss and reflect on mutual interests( Wikipedia -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook. The online community I have been following is facebook -www.facebook.com

Facebook is a social networking website that was launched in February 2004 and was privately operated and owned by Facebook INC. Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerman and his fellow students while attending Harvard. Facebook is used by members to keep in contact with friends all over the world. Users can create profiles which allow them show information about themselves, including photos, lists of personal interests, contact info, and videos.

Facebook has become the top social network and has been highly used in the years 2009 and 2010. On February 5th, 2010 their were 400 million users linked to facebook. Features of facebook include personal rooms, chat room, photos, status, pokes, attachments, creation of interest groups and like pages.

Facebook has had some major ethical issues particularly in relation to privacy. It has been blocked from several countries and banned in some work places to discourage employees from wasting their time.

All in all facebook is a great way to keep in contact but should be used in moderation.

Assistive Technology

We had an interesting tutorial, in which we were introduced to 'Assistive Technology'. We had a lot of fun testing out buttons which were all different sizes and colors, recording devices and talking alarm clocks. We even made delicious cheese scones with the help of various buttons and talking devices.
What is Assistive technology? Cook and Hussey 1995 refer to assistive technology as a set of 'devices, services, strategies and practices that are conceived and applied to ameliorate the problems faced by individuals with disabilities'. These include all commercial, modified and customized devices.
One of the many assistive devices available would be: Big Step-by-step Communicator
- This is a large surface area switch(5 inches)
- It comes with colored interchangeable tops e.g. yellow, green, red and blue
- Digital sound with 2 minuets of recording time.
- Enable Mart cost: US$ 159.00 (http://www.enablemart.com/Catalog/Basic-Communicators/Big-Step-by-Step-Communicator)
This assistive device can help the user communicate, gain more understanding of the cause and effect relationship, have some control over their environment and the task. The device could enable the user to do activities that would normally require fine motor co-ordination by attaching the device to equipment like a food processor.

Digital Camera's- use and applications

Digital Camera's are a form of information technology. The digital camera is a great tool we can use everyday to capture moments, memories and information. Digital photos and video's can be used and stored in a variety of ways. In class we discussed the use and applications of the digital camera and the place they could have in the OT practice." A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature". This statement could be true in relation to Digital camera's. There are great pluses when it comes to using digital cameras as opposed to the old film camera's but there are features that are unique to the old film cameras that we sometimes miss. For example the feeling of excitement you got, when you picked your photos up from the print shop and opened the packet to see your photos for the first time. They were glossy and fresh and there was always a feeling of novelty attached to them. When we used the old film camera's, all we need was the camera and the film where as with digital camera's we have to have other pieces of technology to process the photo's e.g. cables, computer, photo shop software, memory stick,CD's,USB etc...
With digital photo's all it takes is a flick of the wrong button and they are gone!
But I think its fear to say, that all the great features of the digital camera far out weigh these few little snags. There are many things we can do with digital photos. We can manipulate, store and transfer them using technology without being an expert. We can upload the photo's on to the computer and store them in files, upload them on the internet(flickr, facebook etc). We can crop photo's, change the colors and add special features. There are issues that arise when using digital camera's and processing the photo's. For example privacy, consent.
There is a place for digital camera's in the OT practice- a tool to measure the progress of a clients functional abilities, a teaching tool for the client or a student, visual cues etc..
Features of the digital camera: There are two types of zoom a camera can have digital/optical. Optical zoom is when the lens of the camera physically move to bring you closer to the subject without the photographer having to move. It is the best type of zoom and will produce the best quality. The higher the number of optical zoom the further away from the subject the photographer can be and still get great results. Digital zoom crops the image and then magnifies the cropped image. This produces low quality results(Kodak, 2010).http://www.kodak.com
Megapixel- is equal to 1 million pixels. Digital pictures are made up of tiny tile like elements joined together to made one complete image. The higher the pixel count the higher the quality.(Digicamhelp, 2010)http://www.digicamhelp.com/camera-features/camera-parts/megapixels/

Video Creation

This is the video that my team created, the theme is overcoming adversity. We decided to make our movie personal, as we have all had a share of the issues monkey faces.

To create our video we used a storyboard to establish a starting point for our video. we found our story board helpful as a guide, as it kept us focused on the story. We used the story board to establish each shot, the type of shot. The storyboard was a good tool for determining the angle of each shot.

We used the Apple mackintosh video editing program to cut and add features such as music, fade and dissolve. The step-by-step video editing program made it easy and less intimidating. We had a lot of fun filming and editing this movie. Lots of giggling and sniggering.
